The free market economic system quite literally is the savior of the world. A study by the World Bank revealed that, in 1820, about 84% of the world’s population survived on just $1.90 per day per person. That’s grinding poverty. Today, less than 8% of the world’s population still lives on $1.90 per day (all are 2011 dollars). That’s dramatic. The free market economic system is lifting many billions of people out of poverty.

Yet, an astonishingly small number of people know how and why the free market system came into being or how it is able to create wealth so prolifically. That’s downright dangerous to everyone’s well-being. It’s important to understand the goose that lays golden eggs. Economic policies and proposals that actually hamper wealth creation abound. Misguided people advocate replacing what works so well with collectivist schemes that have already failed miserably many times, casting millions back into poverty and worse.

This book is written clearly and simply so that that virtually anyone can understand it. There is no unexplained jargon. It is short. It is not an economics course, but the reader will gain a deep understanding of and appreciation for how the free market economic system works. It is an exhilarating and satisfying feeling when that bright light of comprehension clicks on! Enjoy.

WARNING: Our public elections do not work correctly.  Elections have never worked as well as people thought they did. Over the past 200 years, career politicians have found multiple ways (like gerrymandering) to rig elections and insulate themselves from voters. The integrity of elections also has been eroded, opening the door to fraudulent manipulation.

Elections are the only effective way citizens can maintain control of their government. Elections must function properly. Several serious problems need to be corrected. Excellent solutions are now known for all such problems, but few people comprehend them. One might hope that clearly laying out the problems with their solutions will quickly lead to solid elections.  Sadly, that is unlikely.

Politicians in office must legislate the fixes. Only a small minority of them are sincerely motivated to do so. Most politicians simply strive to remain in office, and that is facilitated to some extent by elections that do not function as they should. It is virtually impossible to get politicians to do anything they do not want to do.

Our species, Homo sapiens, is the first and, so far, still the only species to possess the capability to think rationally. All of the amazing progress that we enjoy could not have happened without rational thought. Obviously, this unique ability is extremely important.

Can you define precisely what is and what is not rational thinking? Do you think rationally?

A relatively small cadre of rational thinkers can make contributions that lift and benefit all of society. That surely has happened. However, we are finding out that a small cadre of rational thinking practitioners focused on the scientific disciplines is not sufficient to maintain and advance a free and prosperous society. We are in a considerable amount of trouble in that regard.

In the early chapters, rational thinking and rational self-interest are carefully defined. The high points in the progress of rational thought from its beginning to the present are summarized. We pause in the present to evaluate our condition before proceeding to project the most probable futures. It’s Homo sapiens from our very beginning to our eventual end.
